Kushina's first Pokemon on arrival. Their relationship started off with Vulpix only wanting her love and acceptance and Kushina... not wanting anything to do with it. At all. This was completely related to her once being the host for Kyuubi, the Nine-Tailed Fox, back home. She didn't really get along with him at all, given that one of her own ninjutsu was a set of chakra chains that were able to bind and restrain him. Their original partnership was pretty unwilling on Kushina's part too, since she didn't know what the hell was going on until it was about to happen. As a result, a lot of revulsion that she bore toward the Kyuubi ended up getting transferred to Vulpix.

More out of habit than anything, she started calling him Kyuubi, so the nickname stuck. He refuses to answer to anything else now. After a couple days in Johto, she had a little heart-to-heart with him about why she reacted as she did on day one, re: her past. After that, they had a weird understanding and she acts like she doesn't care when others are around, but if she thinks she's alone, she doesn't object to him crawling up on her lap for food or whatever. It's taken a while, but she more or less has come to accept him. Even after a bit of a backwards slide when he caught a Fire Stone in his mouth.

He also has a habit of letting himself out of his Pokeball and following Kushina around. If she starts yelling at someone, he takes a fighting stance right behind her, all of his tails fanned out.
