Behind the Scenes sorta thing, re: Kushina and Kyuubi the Vulpix

[After two very long days, the second involving a very long flight from New Bark Town to Blackthorn City, Kushina had hit a point in her exhaustion that she found a second wind. Unable to sleep, she crept out of bed and eventually found her way to the kitchen. She was letting hot water sit in a cup of instant ramen when subtle noises caught her attention. Brandishing a pair of chopsticks, she lowered them when she saw it was the Vulpix she got on arrival.]

Oh, it's you... What do you want anyway, huh?

[Her eyes narrowed as she watched the little Pokemon walk around and jump up onto the chair next to hers. It sat down and watched her with big brown eyes as she checked her ramen. Deigning it cooked enough, she dug in. After a few bites, she realized he was still watching her. After licking his lips a few times, she sighed and got out a bowl. Carefully, she doled out some of her ramen and placed it on the table in front of Kyuubi's seat. After looking at it for a few seconds and then at Kushina as if to gauge if it was okay, he jumped onto the table and started chowing down.]

I guess you were hungry... Well, don't get used to it, you mini-Kyuubi. I just don't feel like cooking anything special for you right now.

[They ate in silence, until the Vulpix walked along the table and sat down right in front of her. Kushina pulled her cup closer to get a few last big pieces until she could slurp the rest down in two gulps. She was about to get up from the table when Vulpix got up and reached up a paw to rest on her hand. It let out a soft cry as she went to snatch her hand back, which caused her to pause for a moment.

She just had to listen to Minato and agree to keep this thing around for a few days before making a final decision to keep or trade him. Grimacing, she sat back down and watched in amazement as the Vulpix removed his paw and settled down again in front of her.

Alright... I get it. You want to talk? Then let's talk. We'll talk about why I have a problem with you and every other fox-like creature around here.

[She waits a few seconds before starting to listen carefully and make sure no one was shuffling around nearby this late at night. Satisfied to hear nothing, she began.]

Back home, when I was a young girl, I was brought from my home village, Uzushiogakure, to Konohagakure to become the Kyuubi's vessel, or jinchuuriki. The Kyuubi is a nine-tailed demon fox the spreads disaster and ruin everywhere he goes. So a long time ago, Lady Mito Uzumaki had him sealed within her. I had special chakra, even for my clan, which is why I was singled out to hold the Kyuubi. The whole thing was kept a secret in both villages. Only the leaders and some high-ranking officials knew at first. I didn't even know until after I got there. I got to meet Lady Mito before they sealed him in me though, and she told me that if I filled myself with love first, I could be happy even though I was a jinchuuriki. I eventually did. It took a while, but I fell in love with Minato. I had the love of my friends, even if they didn't know what I held inside me. But I couldn't ever bring myself to even like the Kyuubi. We had been forced together and I guess a part of me never liked accepting it. Especially since one of the ninjutsu I developed involved special chakra chains that I could use to bind him. I even once told him that while he kept the world at bay, I kept him at bay. Needless to say, I could tell he didn't like me very much either.

[She paused for a moment, surprised that he was still watching her intently. His head nodded as if to say "go on". It was all the encouragement she needed to continue. Something about being able to tell her story to someone who hadn't known her for most of her life and not worry about them interrupting to judge her for her general attitude toward foxes was a bit of a relief.]

And then one night, things got worse. It was the night Naruto was born. Somehow this crazy masked man knew that a jinchuuriki's seal is at its weakest during childbirth. He somehow got in to where I had been hidden outside the village, killed Sandaime's wife and an ANBU Black Ops ninja and separated Minato from me before the seal could be repaired. He took me to a lakefront where I could be bound and then he extracted the Kyuubi from me. I thought childbirth was bad... having the Kyuubi pulled out of me drained so much of my energy. If I hadn't been an inheritor of the famous Uzumaki longevity, I would've died. Instead, I could barely move to stop the masked man from carrying out his plan to use the Kyuubi to destroy Konoha. When he realized I was still alive, the masked man ordered the Kyuubi to kill me. Only fitting for the bijuu to kill his host, was his reasoning. Lucky for me, Minato came to my rescue before I was crushed and he took me to Naruto. I stayed there while he went to deal with the Kyuubi and the masked man.

But then he came back for us. He had moved the Kyuubi outside the village and the masked man was nowhere to be seen. I was ready to use up the rest of my life force to reseal the Kyuubi in me again and take him with me to my death. I knew I was going to die soon anyway. But Minato wouldn't let me, even after I bound the Kyuubi with my chakra chains and used them to form a barrier too. He wanted to seal that monster inside Naruto. Our newborn baby boy, ya know! He wanted to use the Reaper Death Seal to kill off half the Kyuubi's chakra permanently, then seal the rest in our son! Sure he'd be putting some of our chakra in the seal so we could see him later, but... it's not the same as having a living, breathing parent to be raised by. Instead of at least having his father, he'd have no parents. We had such a horrible argument, even after I think he summoned the reaper death seal, going by the seal that appeared on his stomach and the Kyuubi shrinking in size. That monster took advantage of my condition getting worse and Minato's concern to try and kill Naruto, but we both got between them.

[She stood up to slip out of her dark green dress, letting it hang around her waist. She carefully rolled up her shirt to show Vulpix the giant scar that covered her abdomen, earning a sympathetic whine. After a few more seconds, she straightened out her shirt, but left her dress as it was.]

We were barely alive on his claw, but Naruto was safe. I had to admit defeat and Minato sealed our chakra in, but I probably got a lot more in because I kept talking. Even seeing what Naruto grew up to be here, I'm still sorry we put that demon in him. I still wish Minato had been alive to raise him. He could've dealt with the Kyuubi whenever it came back. I know it's really selfish of me to still have that wish, even with everything already done, but I can't help it.

[Kushina sighed and rested her elbow on the table, propping up her face on her hand.]

You're lucky, y'know. If anyone besides Minato or Naruto had asked me to reconsider my decision to dump you in that New Bark Town place, I wouldn't have listened. But Minato seems to like you for some reason... So let's make a deal. I'll keep you around a little longer. But if I still can't get used to having a fox with more than one tail around, I'll give you to him or someone else. That fair?

[The little Pokemon got up and nuzzled gently against her arm. Before she could react, he jumped off the table and waited by the entrance to the kitchen for her. Her lips twitched as if to smile, but failed. So she went to throw out the empty ramen cup and headed back to bed, Kyuubi the Vulpix following her.]
